Days of purple rage

By Richard Lutz

Well, it seems the US can now join an elite core of countries run by criminal thugs- Russia, North Korea, Afghanistan. Trump has stacked the Supreme Court with a crowd of spineless muppets and is now more or less immune to criminal charges if he takes the White House. He will have the power to ignore the rule of law, like a spoiled brat, like a spoiled rat.

It’s no better summed up than by the British satiric magazine Private Eye. What is chilling is that the edition I show above is a year old. And it still catches the horrendous mood of when a presumptive presidential candidate, a convicted felon, is told he can do what he bloody well wants.

I heard the news (oh boy) as I walked along a path embroidered by white clover:

And I found here, on the day that Trump trumped the law, that violet and purple were the dominant colours on this early July morning …a young Scottish July still lacking warmth.

The fields were dotted with spotted orchids:

Thistle fringed the barley fields:

Vetch, an ugly name but a purple gem by the side of the path. Remains of red campion twirled among its stalks:

And underfoot, self heal, also called woundwort and used to treat minor ailments:

The track passes a pond. It’s one of a pair tucked among the reeds:

There’s a wee small pond and a big small pond, if you get my meaning. Some years, the big small pond is home to swans. This year, there’s ducks. Dragonflies buzz among the rushes and a miniscule frog leaps over my boot.

Further on, a hedge flower that I can’t identify. More blue than violet or purple. Bluish purple, let’s call it.

My arsenal of phone apps are contradictory and confused. One even says it’s a form of rhododendron which simply can’t be right. Another calls it mealycup sage, a name I’ve never heard before. Does AI make these things up? Has it reconfigured the natural world? Is it re-ordering our minds? Re naming our world? Will it make Trump go away? Can it?

Boris bizarrely rattling on about Parrot-borne diseases is a telling conclusion to our own strange period of Tory government… perhaps it’s possible that one day Oor Donald will utter things so barking that even the US electorate will feel it’s gone too far? I know, naive optimism…

For me the awful moment will come when he is announced as the Republican nominee officially and is then ALLOWED to run for the presidency. At that point…whether he becomes president or not is secondary…the damage to the USA will at that specific point be almost irreversible.

All along my inner voice has said “no this is too silly… it simply can’t be allowed to happen…can it…?”
But what do I know… I live in a country that spawned Johnson and Truss ?!?!?
    Nice flowers tho…

For sure….I have to say I fail to comprehend how a judicial system has been allowed to evolve on party political grounds… am I missing something here…?

Re Trump and the Supreme Court:

This link ( https://www.sethsteinzorpoet.com/blog/welcome-to-rome ) is to a blog that a friend writes. As he says in the middle, he was an administrative lawyer for many years, and is also a poet. I find him thoughtful, articulate, and challenging.

I will always despise the despicable Trump father and son (among too many other reasons) for destroying my beloved steeplechase at Coney Island. If he is elected, I’ll be in italy.

The mystery plant is definitely a salvia (aka sage) but I don’t know what sort.

    Beautiful flora, Richard-congrats!
As for Donald and his cheating, lying Trumpettes, there are not enough pages to contain my disgust as this person. It is possible that he could lose to the Democrats but he is assured a safe haven in his best friend’s back yard-the Kremlin.

Even though the bar is pretty low these days, congrats for living on the saner side of the pond

How do you envisage this train-wreck of a Presential campaign working out? The options offer scant comfort. The TV debate was both saddening – Biden – and scary – Trump – and the commentaries since then disconcerting.

After living for 50 years in a Herefordshire Tory fiefdom and feeling disenfranchised, we now have a Green MP.
