Something’s rotten in the state of Sunak

Richard Lutz says this government is sinking into a sea of sleaze

Here’s one for the history books: disgraced Prime Minister Boris Johnson is under police scrutiny for ignoring his own covid rules. It’s happened before. And it’s happening again.

He’s now a backbench MP representing the good folks of his London constituency. But he’s been asked for more information about breaking rules while in Downing Street.

So where is the Rt Hon MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip as this furore gathers pace? Where is he just now to answer questions and maybe…just maybe..aiding the 74,000 people he represents in The House of Commons? Not in Parliament where he earns £84,000 for his backbench job. Not in his constituency helping those who voted for him. Not even in Britain.

Bojo is in Las Vegas gobbling up a six figure sum for reading out a speech, peppered with witticisms, to something called The Scale Global Summit at the world famous Bellagio casino. No side bets here: Boris is making a shedload of cash. And I hear the quaint squeal of pigs heading for the money trough.

So, it seems, Johnson makes millions while ignoring his backbench public service job after being sacked by his own party. His lecturing around the world earns him up to £250,000 per speech.

It’s the way of the world down in Westminster- the slime and sleaze that the present PM, Rishi Sunak, has to deal with. Though he won’t wrestle with the Big Question of how his fellow MPs are allowed to roll their snouts in the hog trough rather than do their day job. As long as they declare their outside income and can show it causes no conflict of interest, they can plunge deep into the grubby pit of ready cash.

Here are some odious examples:

The magazine Private Eye, for instance, reports that an MP earns a £2000 per month retainer from the Betting and Gaming Council to represent its interests in Parliament. The position should come in handy as the House of Commons reviews the government’s current white paper on gambling reform.

Another MP grabs a £60,000 sinecure as advisor to a huge property developer. The same hard working MP makes another £60k per year as a director for a group of private schools in the south of England. Conflict of interests? Of course not…

Sort of like Bojo, the blustering baboon who stuffs dosh into his bank account rather than doing his job. After being sacked by his own party for gross incompetence.

MPs live a life of arrogant entitlement …

Britain’s boss Rishi Sunak can’t escape this greedy sleaze that is poisoning not only his right wing Conservative Party but the whole rudderless country now run by these greedy politicians.

His two Downing Street predecessors, Johnson and Liz Truss, lived and breathed within an airtight universe where elected MPs live a life of self- deluded entitlement and privilege. Now Sunak is left to sweep up the what has been left behind.

Ignoring for the time being the case of his Home Secretary who wanted to wiggle out of a speeding ticket, we move swiftly, inevitably, to the cash cow of the Covid backstory. It never ends, it seems. It’s just part of the worn fabric of a tattered government.

Onboard the gravy train express

So, as we gag on the latest stench from the Johnson era, it emerges that a pair of millionaire Tory Party donors had an inside track on selling rapid testing devices to battle the pandemic virus. Somehow, the government bureaucrats issued a contract (‘a letter of intent’) which remarkably guaranteed a payment even if a final deal was not agreed.

Well, the deal wasn’t pursued and the company owned by the two donors still received £38m. Thats’s right, thirty eight million pounds for what was termed ‘mobilisation costs’. The Prime Minister at the time? A man called Boris Johnson. These details were uncovered by a Freedom of Information request. The Guardian newspaper quoted the chief investigator as saying : ‘What we desperately need is an independent review into how this happened over and over again.’

Yes, that would be nice. Along with a mass clean out of the greedy bunch of creeps who are blockbooked on the gravy-train express that is Parliament.

A glorious day in Westminster! The sun was shining, recess was approaching, and Boris Johnson was under police investigation. It could only have been improved by the knowledge that the former prime minister was being forced to handle the latest scandal from somewhere deeply inappropriate. And so it was with even greater delight that we learned Johnson is currently in Las Vegas, addressing… well, who knows who he’s addressing? We can be confident he doesn’t. Let’s just assume it’s the annual conference of the Association of Loan Sharks, Bail Bondsmen, Lap Dancers & Allied Trades.

The stench from the Westminster trough is permeating the fabric of British society. This government, full of ministers without capacity, should have gone last year, if not sooner. Hopefully, Johnson – like Trump – will be brought down by the legal systems they sought to corrupt. That Johnson is still called a ‘Right Honorouble Memeber’ is wrong in so many ways.

And our Scottish Government seems determined to slide into, if not sleaze, then apparent historical incompetence…we’re doomed…

The most corrupt bunch ever to rule over us, and they really really don’t care that we know.

Between them the GMB and Unite gave £1,000,000 to Labour MPs last year. And that’s when they’re in opposition.
Don’t imagine that Labour MPs will be any different to the present government if they get into power. I haven’t noticed them refusing to go on paid for junkets with the many APPGs who swan around the world in five star luxury engaging in ‘research’.
Money buys influence. The sums involved in corrupting an MP to further your ends are absolutely tiny on a corporate scale and represent amazing value.
If we want really capable MPs we need to pay them properly and forbid their having any sort of outside sponsorship, jobs or paid employment of any sort. Even speech making.
